As a trusted advisor to executives, one of the things that I enjoy is allowing leaders to have a confidante to explore concerns or ideas with. From my 25+ years of advising executives, I have served as a trusted ear for senior leaders to reach out to whenever they are experiencing a challenge.
Often I find that execs in similar positions are experiencing similar pain points simultaneously. It’s can be comforting to know that other senior leaders across industries are struggling with the same challenges, so I’d love to share some topics that I have explored with CMOs in the last month:
1. My budget has been slashed but everyone is expecting me to hit the same results and make a splash at conferences. Can you consider facilitating a brainstorming session that will allow us to reframe what is possible and outline what would be further possible with more budget for my head of sales and CEO?
2. Do I stay or do I go? The CMO role isn’t supported and I’m not set up for success. What should I do? When is it time to move on or dig in?
3. I am struggling with who to hire in marketing at this point and where to use agency partners. Can I explore some ideas with you?
4. I need to establish a corporate image for my company that is separate from our consumer-facing brands I am running. Where do I start?
5. We are about to rebrand our company and we need to think about the launch. Can I bounce some ideas around with you?
6.We are breaking into new markets—do we hire a PR firm in each market or can we get the results we need if we have one firm with a national footprint? What will be the things I look for to make this decision?
7. We have a founder leaving our company and it’s going to be disruptive. How do we do this gracefully and message to key stakeholders?
8. My CEO has told me we’re going from public to private—what are the steps I need to be thinking through and the resources I need in this new scenario?
9. M&A will be our growth strategy. What kind of blueprint can I create to map new companies into ours with ease—branding, marketing, internal communications, etc. Need to talk to get some thinking going on this.
