10 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know about Instagram

At Red Fan Communications, we understand the power of using social media as a platform for your brand’s voice and as a unique tool to communicate with customers and clients directly. That’s why we work to constantly stay updated on the latest social media trends – not only to better understand the outlets our clients’ audiences are migrating to but to also understand how to best engage with them on those outlets.

In just a handful of years, Instagram has risen in popularity, growing its user base to hundreds of millions of people. It wasn’t until recently, however, that companies and advertisers began to leverage the medium’s rich potential for customer engagement through visual content. Instagram is used by many influential fashionistas, foodies, jet setters and fitness junkies – so it’s no surprise that influential brands would do the same.

Yet, Instagram still seems to be a second thought for companies looking to establish their social media presence. What’s not so obvious to these companies is how many users are actively utilizing the platform and better yet, engaging with each other and their favorite brands.

Still need convincing? Here are some interesting facts and helpful tips shared by PR Daily, Fast Company and Instagram about the social media platform and its impact.

1) Instagram has gained over 300 million active users since its 2010 establishment.

2) Facebook acquired Instagram in April 2012 for $1 billion in cash/stock.

3) The name "Instagram" is a portmanteau of "instant camera" and "telegram".

4) Hashtags are used to help attract other like-minded Instagrammers to your account. It’s recommended that you use more specific hashtags, instead of words like #photo or #food, in order to attract those looking for similar topics on the app.

5) When Instagram was released for Android in April 2012, it was downloaded more than one million times in less than one day.

6) An average of 70 million photos are shared through the app each day.

7) According to Fast Company, engagement on Instagram is 15 times that of Facebook's, with users spending an average of 257 minutes per month on the app.

8) Instagram ads have helped retailers increase their ad’s return on investment by 32 percent and brand awareness by 10 percent.

9) 49 percent of all Instagram users use the app every day.

10) Instagram receives 1,000 comments and 8,500 likes per second. That adds up to 1.2 billion likes per day.

In public relations, we understand the need to humanize a brand in order to engage with your audience. Using Instagram (properly) allows companies to show sneak peeks of new developments, behind-the-scenes moments of the work place, live updates of events and most importantly, the face (or faces) behind a brand name.

This doesn’t need to be an elaborate effort either, since your company is most likely already doing picture-worthy things. Whether you are in a team meeting, attending a community event or celebrating company wins – get in the habit of snapping a quick photo while you are “in the moment”.

As a friendly reminder, be sure your photos and captions are tasteful, timely and true. After all, the point of your Instagram account is to be an authentic representation of your brand through eye-catching photos that engage with your audience.
