Ben Milam Whiskey is a new, award-winning spirits company with a distillery and tasting room located in Blanco, Texas. The company's founder, Marsha Milam, is a woman who knows how to bring new and exciting things to Texas. After a career in PR and entertainment and creating much-loved events like the Austin Film Festival and KGSR’s “Unplugged at the Grove,” Marsha decided to go in a different direction. She attended her first distilling class, hired KOVAL distillery (out of Chicago) as her consultant, ordered a German-made pot still, bought two acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country and opened her own distillery to produce a bourbon and rye that would make Texans proud.
Marsha chose the Ben Milam name after her first cousin, six times removed. Benjamin Rush Milam was a Texas freedom fighter who died fighting for the state’s independence in the 1836 battle for San Antonio. When the Ben Milam Whiskey Distillery and Tasting Room opened its doors in Blanco on Texas Independence Day in 2017, the Texas hero finally got a namesake that captures his true, bold and gallant character.
Everything from its rich, historic roots to the flavor and spirit of this new Texas brand has been crafted intentionally to live up to the Ben Milam name.
Marsha came to Red Fan knowing that she had an amazing product but needed help telling its story and, ultimately, building a brand.
With only a few weeks until the tasting room opening, Red Fan created a media outreach and social media strategy for the first offering from the Ben Milam Whiskey Distillery, a five-year single barrel bourbon. Red Fan established a target audience, brand tone of voice, launched the brand’s social media channels and suggested the creation of a website to house the brand's story. We worked quickly with website developer Left/Right Media to quickly launch the site, complete with incredible imagery and a winning narrative.
Prior to launching the social media channels, Red Fan scheduled a photo shoot at the tasting room to make sure had a plethora of product photos from which to draw for compelling social content. That same day, the team was on-site to attend the ribbon cutting and official opening of the tasting room.
Red Fan’s initial outreach focused on the Austin-San Antonio areas, as suggested by Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits (Ben Milam’s distribution partner) and Twin Liquors (where the whiskey is available for purchase). We garnered media hits in both markets and, after just few months of active media engagement and pitching, Ben Milam Bourbon received a rare Double Gold medal at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition–which Red Fan and Ben Milam announced with an official press release.
To date, Red Fan has secured coverage for Ben Milam Whiskey in the Austin American-Statesman, Tribeza, CBS Austin, FOX San Antonio, Gear Patrol, Eater, Austinot and more.
Red Fan is now working with Ben Milam Whiskey to launch its second offering, Ben Milam Rye.
